Search Engine Optimization is your ticket to success. In today’s world the first thing someone does when trying to find a product or service is head to the search engines for a quick answer. I hear more and more stories of businesses making millions off the net and putting more and more time into building a significant brand for the web. If you don’t have a website it’s hard to even be considered as a serious business.

Each year I see more people throwing out their phonebooks for a faster more convenient way to find what they are looking for. And where are they heading? To the Search Engines. It’s much faster to click on internet explorer and type in the keywords “gas station.” Than to pull out the phone book and flip through a million thin pieces of paper, when you can automatically find a result that is relevant to you in a couple clicks.

Search Engine OptimizationAfter someone searches for what they want in the search engines they usually choose one of the top five choices. The search engines carry a sense of integrity and value that people trust and are fascinated by. Search Engine Optimization is just like any other marketing, its getting your name out there and making your business easily accessible to the public. 20 years ago you might have had to hand out flyers, put ads in the phonebook, and walk door to door. But now this all happens digitally through building links, making business postings, and promoting your products and services around the net so you are easily accessible and so that the search engines can determine your relevancy on the internet.

There are two parts to search engine optimization. The first part is On-Page SEO. Through On-Page SEO we restructure your website so that the search engines can properly determine what each page is specifically about and how to place that page within the search engines. Pretend you sell automotive parts, if someone types in “buy tires in Louisville” we want the search engines to direct that consumer to the page on your website that sells tires.

A lot of people think that the search engines are magic and that what they do is mind boggling and is probably from outer space. But in actuality the search engines were built by man along with their algorithm’s which determine search engine rankings in a very specific way. Imagine if you wanted to Googlize your computer, what is the first thing you would look for?

Well the easiest thing to look at is the text. What is the name of the document? What is its main heading? And what are the most common words? Once determining which words have the highest keyword density the search engines can then make an assumption of what the document is about.

Let’s pretend you had written a school paper for your Biology class and the content of the paper said the word “trans-fats” 22 times out of 500. So the search engine can determine that the document has a keyword density of 4.4% which is higher than any other in the paper. It can then throw your paper into a category containing a variety of keywords such as “health, biology, and trans-fats.” Now when you search for your Biology paper you can type any of those keywords to find your document.

But what if you had another health document on your computer that also talks about trans-fats? You also mentioned this document in your Biology paper, tell your friends about it in an email, sent it to a family member through an instant messenger, and it is something that you looks at much more frequently than your Biology paper. The search engine can then determine that even though the document doesn’t say the word “trans-fats” quite as many times as your Biology paper. It is used more often and is talked about a lot more so the search engine can then determine that it is more important than your Biology paper for search results containing the keywords “health, biology, and trans-fats.”

Social Media MarketingThe second portion of Search Engine Optimization is link building. What link building does is create thousands of external links pointing back to your site. This shows significance of your company on the web and is one of the main factors the search engines use to determine how important your site is or how high it should be ranked in the search engines. This works just like popularity in the real world. If there are one hundred people out there talking about your company then your companies probably going to be more popular than someone who has 5 people talking about them. But then again there is a catch, what if one of those 5 people was the Governor? Then quite possibly the company with only 5 people talking about them could be more popular because the Governor is an important person and his influence stretches a lot wider than the average person.

Well the search engines work in the same way. You could have a 100 links on the internet from various directories or you could have that one link in the Courier-Journal. If Google see’s that the courier-journal is talking about your company then it is going to make you rank high in the search engines. Google determines link importance by assigning a Page Rank value to every website it finds. For instance the Courier-Journal has a PR6 where as the New York Times has a PR 9. Although it would be hard to get you listed in the New York times without a significant story we do take the time to find important, relevant and high rage rank value links for your site.
